This was the fix for the uplay error if this is your first time using Uplay on this computer you need to login at least once before using offline mode. It might download a patch or update to play after you do this because that is probably why it was stuck. Enter it and it should work and log you in correctly. Now open uplay again and it will ask you for your email address and pass again. Once you have unticked the box, select save or ok and close uPlay. Untick this box to tell uPlay to go online. Once in the settings menu of play you will find a small tick box for “Always start uplay in offline mode”. On the login screen where you are asked for your email and password on Uplay there is a small gear. First we need to set uplay back to online.

Some people suggested on the forums to use your username and not your email address. To appear offline, you just need to open Steam client, go to Friends, and set your profile to Offline.
